Mark Fitzgibbon Quartet
4 STARS
"There is something about a a sax-and-piano combination that defintes jazz. The great piano-sax jazz combination such as Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, Joe Zawinul and Cannonball Adderley and later with Wayne Shorter, Lee Konitz and Bill Evans, made the music come alive, the sax swelling after the initial notes resonate against the piano't chords. Melbourne pianist Mark Fitzgibbon (brother of Nichaud, son of Smacka) captures that here, teaming up with David Rex on alto sax. There is a real affinity on these smooth-textured originals, with Rex often dazzling." Leon Gettler
